Still Keeping Busy!

Pine siskins are small finch-like birds with yellow.

Critters are still coming to rehab while others are being released.  It seems the pine siskins are having a problem with Salmonella currently, with sick ones coming to rehab and others found in very bad shape in peoples’ yards.  We just can’t overstress the importance of keeping the bird baths and feeders clean, wash in a 1:10 bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and don’t use them for a couple of weeks or so.  Via the Catamount Institute YES program we have had the opportunity to visit with kids and adults from Lincoln, Manitou, and Ute Pass Elementary Schools the last couple of days to discuss Raptor Adaptations and talk about native Colorado birds of prey.  The kids had some pretty good questions and very interesting stories of their own to share!  Special Thank You! to Zach and Tracy.

GHO release with the Ball family.  Thank you, Linda, for sharing your pix!

Yep, pigeons are at it again-babies in January (!)  These are free feral pigeons that made their nest on the ground underneath some boxes outside.

White-browed stellar jay is wintering over, recovering from suspected West Nile Virus.

Fox recuperating after suffering a broken toe and foot laceration.

This guy thinks he has super powers, now that he can fly circles in his enclosure!  Anticipated March or April release for him.

Mallard hen recovering from leg fracture.

Mallard drake preparing for release in the next couple of weeks.

Mallard hen preparing for release in the next couple of weeks.

Fall and winter really haven’t slowed down too much; in fact, we’re still pretty busy around here, with critters coming to rehab as others are released.  Recent releases include Great Horned Owls and Red-Tailed Hawks, upcoming releases include mallards, and hawks ready to go in the next few weeks.  Thank you to everyone helping us get these releases done.  Whew!
