It looks like Spring has sprung, with the arrival of a fox kit and
cottontail babies. We anticipate a very busy wildlife rehab
season again in 2006. We again remind you that it is illegal
to keep wildlife and that the best parent for a bird or animal is its
natural mother. Please make every effort to place the baby back
in the nest, unless the baby is injured. More information is
available on our Help page. http://ellicottwildlife.com
Princess the porcupine was succesfully released today. Rehabber
Kris Wagner, in charge of the release, reported that she had never seen
a porky move that fast. Well it is Spring, guess Princess was in
a hurry to …
Thousands see the release of Horton the Great Horned Owl. KRDO
channel 13 came out and filmed the release and it was
spectacular. Horton took a long smooth flight for all the viewers
and headed home. We Love Releases!
Goodbye and good luck.
<>“Fluffy” is a cottontail rabbit who was found by a
lady in Colorado Springs, lying on the roadside after being hit by a car in
December. Fluffy was in very bad shape. She had tears and
abrasions all over her body, and massive head trauma. Her eye
appeared damaged and veterinarian Jamie said she may never see out of that
eye. Fluffy’s head was tilted at a painful angle and she couldn’t
even stand or sit upright. She was flat on her back and all she could
do was roll. Fluffy was hand-fed water, drop by drop, and bunny food,
piece by piece, until several weeks later when she could maintain a semi-normal
position by our placing rolled towels around her in a kennel. She slowly
made progress, feeding and cleaning herself, pulling herself along, until one
day when she could actually move along normally. From there the progress
was pretty speedy. Her eye injury resolved and she seems to
see normally out of that eye. Eventually as the swelling in her
brain subsided and her world wasn’t topsy-turvy anymore, she could
hold her head normally. After all this time and all this work, and with
the wonderful care she received from veterinarian Jamie, we are happy to report
that Fluffy was released this morning to enjoy Springtime activities.
Free bird!
We are happy to announce that Kelly Kestral was released today.
They’re Back!
The Bluebirds are back and they are looking for places to nest.
If you didn’t clean out your nestboxes yet, now is the time.
Remove the old nesting material and brush out the box. If it is
very soiled, you can scrub with a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to
10 parts water).
Lookin Good!
Kelly Kestral seems to be doing really well. You may remember
that Kelly was found last fall with a wing injury and nearly
starved. He has made a full recovery and should be released very
soon.
New to the flight cage!
Last week, a women on her way to work hit a Great Horned Owl on Hwy
94. Long story short, “Horton” made a trip to the Vet and is now
recovering at the center. He will spend some time in the
large flight cage to make sure he is ready for take off.
Great News!
We are so excited to
announce that we have been awarded a 5% Day at Whole Foods. 5% of
the total sales, on May 9th, will be donated to help us provide the
food, housing and medical needs of the many critters that will come to
us over the next few months. We will be reminding you and asking
you to help spread the word of this very special event.
Hello!
This is the new Ellicott Wildlife Rehabilitation Center blog site. A “blog” is a
web log. It is the place to go to keep up with the status of
critters, events and volunteer opportunities at the center. We
hope to post something everyday, unless there is no news or time will
not allow — baby season is upon us. We hope you enjoy getting an
inside look at the comings and goings here at the center and your
questions and comments are welcome! Bookmark this site and check
back often.
For now, we would like to let you know what is going on at our favorite
link, the Valmont owl nestcam. There are now two tiny, fuzzy,
chicks. You will be amazed at how fast they grow!
